Music Term 3 2017 - Creation in collaboration with Art

Week 1-2

In the first week we got into groups of 4-5. In our group, we have Mario, Maria, Tereza, Kalyani and I. We came up with 2 base ideas of creating a jungle, with animal noises, and a monkey with music made by 3 hybrids of monkeys. We decided to use the monkey idea for our whole project. We starting thinking of rough ideas on the art and music aspect of our project, for the music aspect, we decided to make the music online, all from monkey noises, and then edited on Mixcraft. We came to an agreement to get a 1 minute audio clip for our monkey, so 20 seconds for each person in the music role. For the art aspect, we sketched out our monkey, and annotated it, labeling how we would make each part of the monkey and what materials would be required. After this, we made a presentation to present to the class, we also peer evaluated the other presentations conducted by other groups. After our presentation, our peers gave us feedback on our presentation and a bit on our concept of our project, the teachers also gave our group feedback and we were marked on our presentation. The feedback helped improve our project and make it better.

Week 3-4

We started experimenting with our project for the music aspect, between the music members, we all came to a conclusion and allotted ourselves with a different type of monkey from the choices of a gorilla, chimpanzee or a orangutan. I started going to the music room with my group, to use the computers, so we could use Mixcraft to create our own monkey music. I went on YouTube to find gorilla music, as I chose to work on the gorilla. I downloaded these different types of clips and made them all into Mp3 files, so I could use them in Mixcraft, I edited. cropped, chose different parts of the music and combined them to make music I think is good for my level and music that can fit into our sculpture. I changed the beat and the tempo of the clips to make it seem like electronic music, as I like the DJ and trap style of music. I tried to replicate a similar tone, while using monkey sounds. I gave suggestions to my group members, as they wanted some feedback on their music. We also looked at the progress of the art students and liked their creation.
My gorilla music clip, which is 20 seconds long.

Week 5-6

I started showing my music to all my group members and they gave me their suggestions on the music I created, which I used to improve my music creation. I continued to enhance my music creation, I encountered a problem while working on the project. I wasn't able to remove spaces between clips, I wanted to crop the music clips to exactly where I wanted it, but the tool that changed the length of the audio was very inefficient, so I found the feature of removing space between clips, and my problem was resolved. We are going to now edit all of our 3 clips, which are around 20 seconds each and make them into a combined 1 minute clip, we will edit them in and mix different segments of the clips and make one good clip. After we completed our own music, we all came together and combined all of our music and put it into a minute music clip. We emailed and saved our personal music, and started a new mixcraft project, we downloaded jungle background music to support our music, and make it more interesting. We edited in small details, to make it sound interesting towards the audience that are listening to the music. We took my ending segment of my music and put it at the end of the clip, as it suited our 1 minute clip very well.

We combined our music to create a one minute clip.

Tereza working on her mixcraft project.
Maria working on her mixcraft project.
End of Project Reflection

After 7-8 weeks, our group completed the project based around different types of monkeys. The music aspect went well, we created our 1 minute clip, using different monkey noises. A jungle background music was combined as well to blend in with our monkey sound, as it sounded natural. The art part of the project was great, the monkey was created, with his eyes, made out of table tennis balls. The giant plastic water container was successfully used to put the organs of the monkey in, as well as the cables connected to the motor. Overall, everyone concentrated and remained on task, and worked efficiently, which resulted in the music being finished early.

We could have improved the music by making the background a bit unique, for the art side we could have got the motor to work properly, by checking before the project went o display. We could have found a different motor, as the one we currently had didn't work after it was hit.  The LED aspect was amazing. but, if we found a way to get LEDs without using a power cable, so it would work without inconvenience.

Inventing Abstraction

                        Inventing Abstraction

Abstract Art
Abstract art is using a visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world.

At a small age, he started make art on sand as it was popular in United States of America. At the age of 18, he moved to New York and joined the Art Students League to learn more different aspects of art.

In art, we looked at a abstract art, we started on a table with a different tool. We had different music for each table, and using the music that was played in the background we made our art accordingly. After the music stops, we switch to a different table and repeat the same step. We used paint brushes, sketch pens, paper with colour, using glue on paper and using colour pencils.

Serialism
Serial art is an art movement in which uniform elements or objects were assembled in accordance with strict modular principles. The composition of serial art is a systematic process.

Art I created while attempting Serialism.
So, first we took sheets of different colour paper and started cutting the paper into a shape that we decided on, I decided to use a right-angled triangle. Then we started applying the shapes on a paper, making patterns and in order, we kept on trying to develop new patterns, in the end I wasn't really satisfied with what I made, as in my opinion, didn't look great. In the end, I attempted to colour boxes, but it don't go according to my plan. I can take what I've in creating this art piece, and work on improving on my mistakes in the next art piece I make.

Art Reflection
At the start of the unit, we created some presentations on for an artist of our choice and also a composer. For my group, I had to research on Jackson Pollock, as he was an artist. Overall, I didn't find it too interesting, as the research wasn't exciting. On the other hand, we started working more on the art side, where we got to create our own art pieces, was very interesting, even though there was a bit of struggle along the way to finishing my Serialism art piece. The abstract was great because we were given freedom to do whatever we want, listening to soothing music, but had to use the materials that were given to us on each table, which was a great twist, and was a big reason why I enjoyed it.

Child Abuse Commerical Reflection
1. What skills do you feel you have developed in this unit?
I developed my stage combat skills by making it more believable, my collaboration skills because I have been working with other people. My acting skills have improved as well because I have learned new types of roles, where as before I didn't get big roles in a performance. I improved my editing skills with new effects and slow motion, making a commercial was also new, so that also was a improvement.
2. What were your greatest successes in this unit?
My greatest successes in this unit was editing the video and getting it done on time. I think we planned our project really well. We communicated by using social media to plan our performance.
3. How did each group member contribute to the portrayal of the story?
Each member completed their specific roles given. My role and Daniil's role were to edit the video by putting effects, adding the tagline and statistic to the video. We also used slow motion to make it better. Famke, Tereza and Nehal acted in the commercial about Child Abuse, and Famke was the person who recorded it as well. They acted well and made it believable.
4. Do you think television/film can change the way we see the world?
Yes it does,  people watch the news to know what's going around the world, but also false information could be spread which makes it bad.
5. What reaction did your performance get from the audience, and was it expected or planned for? (what was your original objective?)
The reaction we wanted was emotional and they were emotional while watching our commercial as it demonstrated how child abuse actually is, it looked realistic and that was our objective, to make them believe.
6. How can you apply your newly developed skills and experience to other performance work in the rest of this course is to another subject?

This improved my acting and editing skills, which can help me in the next course for drama. The editing skills will help in ICT, as we might be required to edit videos and etc.

Week 1 Post

On the first week of Music, we got into groups of four, and we had to present a presentation about how we would use Indonesian Gamelan Puppetry and Phantasmagoria Light Show with English, Music and Art. I got in a group with Sameer, Daniil and Oliver. It took some time to think of what we were going to do, but we successfully created a good presentation.
We started to present our presentation about Indonesian Gamelan and Phantasmagoria Light Show, We also were marking and giving our opinions on the other group's presentations.

Week 2 Post
We got into groups of 9 to decide our ideas to talk about ideas to combine different aspects. We talked a lot about the Alcatraz Island and prison, as it was a very difficult prison to escape, we talked about the plot, involving the villain switching suitcases including illegal toys being smuggled on the airport. As the innocent man, is sent to prison, he needs to escape. The man asks the warden, on how to escape the prison. The warden asked for hundred lollipops to escape. We used toys, illegal toys which are being smuggled and using lollipops to ask the warden for help to escape to appeal to children. We all gave our own opinions and adding on details to the big story. We will use shadow puppets and music to make the presentation come
to life.
This is the setting for the presentation, the Alcatraz Island/Prison.

Researching on Shadow Puppets.

Week 3-4 Post
We decided all of are roles, the music side, composing music and the art side designing puppets and voicing over the puppets. We finalize our idea for the project and talk about the prison and how to make the escape better and more interesting to children, as the presentation is focused on children. My work in enrichment, designing creatures and people.
Villain, in progress, going to be completed by the art group, rough ideas,
Hybrid/Monster

Week 5 Post
We started composing music and using other music created and adding a bit of notes to change the music, to make it spooky, We are using the song called Requiem for a Dream. We used the piano and practiced the song. We are trying to play the song and add a different voice, to make it different. We have been using the keyboard/piano to learn the song and using tutorials for the song.

Week 6 Post
In Week 6, we made more music and we used the piano to make a main theme and we used the piano to make other creepy music, we used the drums to make music and other instruments for our performance. In Enrichment, we created lots of puppets, cut them out and stuck them cardboard, we made some of them
movable.
Puppets that we created in Enrichment

                                                                      Week 7 Post

During today’s lesson we practised our performance. We reflected on our work so far and discussed how we could improve our product/show. This is what we have decided to do to improve our work, we will add more music, we will sync our audio with visuals, we will practice our speaking, playing the instruments and maneuvering the puppets, designing the puppets in depth, adding colour to the puppet. Each member of our group will be responsible for, I would be moving the puppets, Yuya will be moving the puppets as well. Ahmed will be playing the piano, Daniil will be playing the drums, Sultan, Michael, Oliver, Jad and Sameer will be voicing over the puppets.

Week 8 Post

We used different aspects of writing, creating tension, creating stories that build up tension, it helped us make the right puppet designs because of the description used in writing and ballads. The techniques we learned in the Phantasmagoria Show, like using water on people, to make it a 4D experience, it helped us with ideas, to make the play interesting. The story helped us make certain music, voices and more, it helped us a lot in the play. We made spooky piano tunes, scary drum music, which helped us create the mood and atmosphere for the play. The play was not great, we did not have the right people for the play, as most of our members had to go for the next lesson, because our play went overtime, so we couldn't start it on the same lesson. We can do more rehearsals to make the play better. We could improve our voice, making it louder and improving the accent for the character. We can make more puppets, so they are unique for each character, we can add more backgrounds with high quality, for a better imagination. Reflecting helped us identify the mistakes in the play, help us make the play better and successful, it helped us make necessary changes and make it better.
